Oberlin Preying Manti took top spot in the deep Ohio Valley region in 2018, and there are quite a few signs that point to a repeat in 2019. On the throwing prowess of rising sophomore Zoe Hecht and goal-grabbing hands of U24 National team member Abagael Cheng, Oberlin will have a strong shot at going far in the season at Nationals. Adding coach Libby Lehman and rookies Lucia Mason and Julia Binder to the top team puts together a lot of great ingredients to cook up a strong 2019 season."

The Ohio Valley has been highly contested ground over the last several seasons between Lehigh Gravity, Oberlin Preying Manti, and the Haverford Sneetches, each with at least two trips to Nationals in the last five years [...] Less of a rocket and more of a steady burn, the #6 Oberlin Preying Manti have patiently turned their program towards a vision of discipline in the last several years. The team’s focus is one of many components that will ensure the team improves upon the disappointing finish at Nationals, dropping from no. 4 seed to a tied-for-9th place. Expect strong on-and-off field leadership from captains that include 2019 U24 team member Abby Cheng, and standout backfield players Zoe Hecht and Helen Samuel, along with guidance from first-year coach Libby Lehman of Madison Heist. The 17-player A team roster will seen to leverage the individual strengths of each player into a team result that is greater than its independent parts.

In the Ohio Valley Region, one can say that there’s the top tier of #12 Oberlin Preying Manti and #5 Lehigh, and then everyone else. The two teams earned the bids for the region, and crushed the competition at their respective Conferences in the 2018 postseason. In particular, Oberlin had just eight points scored on them over six games last weekend. While situated in the weaker Conference that only sent three teams on to the eight team Regionals, Oberlin’s regular season backs up their results with quality wins over other D-III programs and close losses to decent D-I schools. With the handling talents of rookie Zoe Hecht in the backfield, paired with the speed of Helen Samuel on both offense and defense, Oberlin looks to be in good shape to claim a bid to Rockford.

Oberlin Manti and Swarthmore Warmothers have previously attended Nationals—both will be betting on their experienced players and influx of skilled and quick-to-pick-up rookies to get them back to the tournament. Oberlin will be utilizing the talents of rookies Zoe Hecht and Anna Barron, who come to Oberlin with ultimate experience. That should pair nicely with the talents of handler Helen Samuel and captains Abby Cheng and Emma March under the guidance of coach Allison Fulton.
